International Polar Year, 2007-2009
International Polar Year officially began March 1, 2007, with special ceremonies in Paris, and other capitals around the world. The participating nations are as diverse as the adventurers who join Quark voyages: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Chile, China, Denmark, Greenland, Finland, France, Germany, Greenland, Iceland, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay and others.
A total of about $1.5 billion US dollars has been set aside by the participating countries to support IPYs many research projects. In addition to the anticipated initial benefits of the research, it is hoped that the event will inspire a new generation of polar researchers, ensuring that our understanding of the Arctic and Antarctic continues to grow well into the future.
We are honoring the two main IPY themes of education and discovery by delivering special presentations on IPY on the following voyages.
